Looking back and looking forward

As 2012 comes to a close, I am incredibly thankful for all the accomplishments The DivaCup and our Diva Team had this year. Some of the memorable moments of 2012 for me include, seeing The DivaCup and DivaWash on shelf in many new stores across Canada and the United States and hearing about all the new International store listings, standing in front of our billboard ad in Times Square, NY, and meeting our Swim Diva, Julia Wilkinson on her return trip from the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Times-Square-Ad-6Each of these experiences reminds me of why Carinne and I started Diva International ten years ago – to give women the opportunity to experience the many benefits that come with using The DivaCup and the empowerment that comes with being more informed about your menstrual health.

Our Diva office has also gone through some exciting changes; we moved offices, painted the walls pink and added a number of new members to the Diva Team. Each day we come to work excited to share the menstrual cup concept with women around the world.

Of course we also like to throw in a dance party or two, and always take time to celebrate our achievements.

One of my most favorite things to do at the office is to read through the many customer testimonials we receive. Each woman’s story is unique and serves as a reminder of the importance of sharing the concept of The DivaCup with women around the world.

Although there isn’t room to share all the testimonies we have received in 2012 in this post, I do want to share a few that remind me of how important it is to share The DivaCup with the women in our lives.

Oh Diva…where have you been all my life? I’m 44 and just discovered Diva. It’s the most amazing invention EVER! My friends must think I’m crazy the way I go on and on about it, but I’ve already converted two of them and now they get it too!

Valerie, CA, USA

I never write testimonials but I felt so strongly about this product that I had to express my gratitude and to help convince someone else to start using one as well. In the past my period was a week of complete disruption and discomfort, from constantly worrying about leaky/changing pads, and counting hours while wearing a tampon. The DivaCup feels as though I’m not on my period at all, I can exercise, do yoga, go about my day like normal, with the added bonus of not creating waste bags full of used feminine products! I only wish I had bought one sooner, this little cup has eliminated the hassle that used to come with that monthly nuisance. Love it!

Stephanie, IA, USA

The Diva Cup is a life saver! I cannot believe this is not the bestselling feminine hygiene product on the market! Just thinking about having to deal with tampons and pads again makes me cringe! Never again! I’m a Diva for life!

Heather, ON, Canada

I have only been using my new DivaCup for one day and I already feel the need to come on here and tell you how happy I am! This is the best thing that ever happened to my period (and my wallet)! Goodbye tampons forever!

Becky, BC, Canada

The Diva Cup is not only an economical and environmental solution, it is so unbelievably convenient. I cannot imagine being without it now! There is a little bit of a learning/usage curve, but with the literature provided with the cup, it’s very easy to become accustomed to it. It took me less than one cycle to feel completely comfortable with The DivaCup. I honestly forget that I am on my period now! Thank you for making such a wonderful product!

Ling, MA, USA

Banner-FrancineAs the New Year rolls in, I want to thank all our Divas and valued partners for taking the journey with us in 2012, and can’t wait for what is to come in 2013.

From our family to yours, have a safe and happy holiday season!

How a little bit of TMI led me to period bliss!

I will never forget my first DivaCup experience.

Setting: Five years ago, my home, early September.

DivaCupBoxLike most new Divas, I was a bit nervous, skeptical and unsure about how this new menstrual care product was going to work out. I won’t lie, it took a few attempts (and cycles) to get the cup positioned just right.

But, I will never forget waking up that first morning to find… nothing! As a young woman with heavy cycles I was ecstatic at the prospect of saying goodbye to leaks through the night! Sadly, and to my dismay, the next night was not as liberating. One word: leaks!

I couldn’t understand what I did wrong from one day to the next and thought maybe the cup just wasn’t right for me.

I talked with some friends, looked online at some forums and of course, The DivaCup website, and after a few more failed attempts I quickly turned to The DivaCup customer care team. It was a little strange emailing a detailed account of my menstrual cup woes to a complete stranger, but the feedback I received in return was well worth that small moment of TMI.

I quickly learned that the issue was not that the cup wasn’t right for me, that I needed the larger size, or that there was a defect with the product, it was simply that when the cup was inserted, it didn’t open all the way. Basically, my flow was being collected in the cup while also leaking past it.

Since starting at Diva International, I have learned that whether you have success your first try or fourth try with The DivaCup, the important thing is that you don’t give up. Our cycles are constantly changing, and so are our bodies, which together make The DivaCup experience different for every woman. Even after years of using The DivaCup, there are times when I realize I have missed an important step, or that it needs a little extra care to open fully and rotate in either direction with ease.

Like anything new, The DivaCup can take some getting used to. We’ve done our best to provide information and tips about The DivaCup on our website and in our user guide, but know there are a few tricks that come with experience and practice – and from sharing our DivaCup story with the women in our lives!

Over the years we’ve gathered a number of helpful DivaCup tips and wanted to share some of these with our Diva Community. We hope this post will also become a helpful resource for our Diva Community and hope you will join in the conversation. Your helpful tips could make a world of difference for a Diva who is still trying to find her unique DivaCup fit!

Insertion Tips

  • As a new user, who may be a bit nervous, try inserting The DivaCup after a hot bath or shower. Your muscles will be more relaxed, making insertion easier.
  • When inserting The DivaCup it is important to relax. The reason being, the vaginal muscles hold the cup in place and if these are tense, insertion will be more difficult.
  • You can also wipe some warm water on the cup; this will help the cup glide in easier.
  • What many women don’t know is that the tightest part of the vaginal canal is right at the opening and when inserting the cup there may be a bit of tension. When women feel this they stop inserting it thinking that it cannot be inserted any further. Once past the opening, the cup will glide in easier.
  • If your cup does leak, it is mostly likely because it has not been inserted properly (horizontally, towards the tailbone), it has not been rotated; it is not inserted at the right angle; or that your vaginal muscles need to be strengthened with kegel exercises (usually necessary after multiple vaginal childbirths).
  • Once inserted, if your DivaCup moves up or down, (or all around), it may be that your vaginal muscles need to be strengthened with kegels. These are simple exercises that can be done at any time and often provide the added support a woman needs to keep The DivaCup in place. For some additional information on kegels visit our Tips for Success webpage and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Removal Tips

  • It is highly unlikely that The DivaCup will become “stuck”, because the vagina is only approximately 4 or 5 inches long! This means that the vagina does not connect to other parts of the body so The DivaCup will not get lost.
  • If The DivaCup does move up in the vaginal canal and becomes harder to reach, simply push down in a series of motions (or bear down) with your stomach muscles (similar to having a bowel movement), reach inside the vagina and pull on the stem until you can reach the base of the cup.
  • When you can reach the cup base, give it a gentle squeeze. Once you have squeezed the base to release the air, pull the cup out at a sideways angle. This allows more air to enter the vagina, and it will then be able to be removed easily.
  • If you still cannot reach The DivaCup, squat on the floor. This will help lower the cup because this position shortens the vagina.
  • Similar to when inserting The DivaCup, when removing the cup, make sure that you are relaxed so that your vaginal muscles do not become tense.

Note: In the rare case that you are still unable to remove The DivaCup after more than twelve (12) hours, we encourage all our customers to seek medical advice.

Cleaning Tips

  • If one of the four holes around the brim of the cup is blocked, fill the cup with water, place your palm on top of the cup and flip upside down. Squeeze gently on the sides of the cup. As you do this, water will push through the four holes, cleaning anything that remains.
  • Cleaning the blocked holes can also be done by gently brushing around the holes with a toothbrush specifically designated for cleaning your DivaCup or use a toothpick to gently clean them.
  • If in a public restroom, you can simply empty the contents of your DivaCup into the toilet, wipe the inside with toilet paper and reinsert. At the next convenient time, give your DivaCup a thorough cleaning with warm water and our DivaWash or a mild, unscented soap.

Note: It is important to empty, wash and rinse The DivaCup with warm soapy water a minimum of two to three times daily (every 10 to 12 hours). You can find some additional cleaning tips on our Care and Cleaning webpage!

Holiday decorating tips from one Diva to the next!

There is nothing more wonderful than the holiday season. If there is one time of year I look forward to and countdown, it is Christmas. There is a magical feeling that comes with the familiar Christmas tunes, gathering of family and friends, baking traditional treats, but most of all, the decorating!

As a child, it was always a family affair to prepare the house for Christmas. My father would take my brothers and I on a search for the perfect tree. We would spend hours trekking through the snow hoping to spot the perfect tree. Together we would hang the ornaments and lovingly place all trinkets, snow globes and stuffed Santas around the house. As an adult, my love of Christmas decorating has greatly intensified and, I must admit, I have had the house decorated for quite a few weeks now.

Over the years, the collection of holiday decorations has grown to the point where I have dedicated a closet to store everything off season. It seems that the more decorations I accumulate, the more I find ways to bring them out and put on display this time of year. And while the holidays can be regarded as the most expensive time of the year, I’m happy to share some ideas to make spirits bright on a budget.

How to use old ornaments

Do you have an assortment of old or mismatched ornaments? Create centerpieces or a base for a holiday arrangement by filling vases, jars or bowls with a mix of different sized ornaments. Adding pine cones or glittered fake fruit add character and interest.

Glitter!

Mix and Match

Add some “glitz” to your table

One of the most common and effective household item I love to use to bring up the glam factor when creating a centerpiece is a mirror. The reflection from candles and sparkly ornaments cast beautiful glowing light and help set the ambiance.

Tip: Place felt circles on the edges of the mirror to prevent scratches on your surfaces.

Glass Dazzles!

… and Sparkles!

Open daily

Add some unexpected flair to your fridge by hot gluing magnets to miniature ornaments! Perfect for displaying your holiday greeting cards and adding cheer to your kitchen.

Tip: Use shatterproof ornaments to prevent breakage.

Ornament Magnets

No room for a tree?

If space is a concern, try an alternative to a traditional tree. Fill a tall vase with brightly coloured or metallic sticks, hang some ornaments and add some festive pieces for your own personal mini tree!

Tree Alternative

Decorating with items you already have

One of the easiest, most inexpensive yet effective ways to add a splash of holiday cheer is by using wrapping paper in place of a table cloth or table runner. Try using the same roll in different areas of your house to coordinate your decorating scheme.

Crystal stemware and glasses double as a great way to add height to tables when displaying ornaments or candles. Fruit bowls double as a beautiful way to showcase some coordinating baubles.

Update your candle holders

For a few dollars, you can create your own “designer” candle holder. A quick trip to a second hand or craft store provided lots of inspiration and materials to add some glamour to a plain candle holder similar to one found with a steep price tag. This is also a great way to re-use any old or mismatched ornaments you may have.

Step 1: Select small wreath and some baubles that will fit the base of your candle holder.Step 2: Use a hot glue gun to adhere the baubles around the center of the wreath. Try using different colors or sizes.

… and decorate some more!

Step 3: Once glue hardens, place your candle holder inside and voila! Instant holiday glamour!

Voila!

Try to remember that a truly rich and festive look can be achieved by quantity, and not quality. Low-cost and even no cost sources offer great seasonal materials to decorate your home. I hope that you feel inspired to bring some Diva Decorating ideas to your home this holiday season. Tell a Diva how you decorate your home for the holidays!

Season’s greetings to all!
