Finding the Right Gynecologist

finding the right gynecologist The DivaCup

Your gynecologist and you share a special relationship – and not just because they are checking out your vagina regularly. Your gynecologist is someone you trust with your health so it is important that you find the right gynecologist for your body and your health concerns.  For this reason, it may not be as simple as calling up the first gyno’s number you see in the phone book. There are many factors that play a part in finding the right gynecologist and the tips below are a great place to start.

Make a “Must-Haves” List

Every gynecologist should meet certain requirements, no matter who you decide on. Every gyno should be certified and educated, experienced with a number of years in the industry under their belt (hehe) and, depending on your body specifically, you can also look for gynos that have a certain expertise. For example, if you are living with endometriosis, you may look for a gyno who focuses on patients with endo.

After these initial must-haves are checked off the list, you should consider the following:

  • Is gender important to you? Everybody has different preferences and experiences, so think about whether you would feel more comfortable with a female or a male gynecologist. This can help you narrow down your list significantly from the get-go.
  • Where are they located? Obviously, you will want to know how close or far your gyno’s office is from where you live and the implications that may have. If you’re willing to have a gyno that is further away, keep in mind that you may not be able to get in for emergency appointments. Take into account your drive time, whether there is public transport stops close by or whether parking will cost you an arm and an ovary.
  • What is included in your health plan? Be mindful that there may be gynos or treatments not affiliated with your benefit package or health plan and ones that are, which may limit your options when it comes to coverage.
  • What are their values? Finding a gyno that shares your views and values is too often overlooked and is actually super important. Whether you are into alternative methods of birth control or really like a gyno with a sense of humor, these are important things to determine before you sign over your vagina to them.

Ask Around

Obviously, walking up to a stranger and asking who they recommend for your vagina may not be the most effective, but getting referrals is an easy way to narrow down your search. You could speak with your regular physician about gynecologists they recommend and get a referral appointment that way, or you could ask family, friends and trusted co-workers if they would recommend their gyno. It’s also important to ask if there is anyone they wouldn’t recommend, which could save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

Do Your Homework

Remember, this is your health so don’t just take someone’s word and leave it at that. Do a little homework and look up your gyno candidates’ credentials, ensure they are properly certified and maybe even look at reviews online from trusted websites.

Make a Consultation Appointment

Narrow down your top choices and make a consultation appointment with each of them. This won’t be an exam, but rather a chance to sit and get to know your potential gynecologist. Don’t leave any stone unturned. Prepare a list of questions you have, from the general to the very specific, and ask each candidate their thoughts. It is important to ask about things that are important to you, whether it is alternatives to the pill or STI testing, so you can get a feel for how you and your potential gyno will groove.

Follow Your Gut

You know yourself better than anyone so don’t feel ashamed of turning down a gyno that seemed perfect on paper but that you just aren’t sure about. There is no shame in putting yourself, your comfort, or your health first. So if something isn’t sitting right with you, keep shopping around. Mindy Lahiri may not actually exist but the perfect gyno for you definitely does.

You Aren’t Stuck

Remember, this doesn’t have to be a permanent relationship. If you end up deciding to go with a gyno and later on find that things aren’t working out the way you had hoped, whether that is because you two have different values or wait times are too long, you are allowed to find a new gyno whenever you see fit.

Are you ready to #GetToYourGyno? Don’t be nervous – you are taking a big step in the right direction for your health. What are some tips you have for finding the right gyno? How did you know when you found her/him? Share your experiences with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!

Chronicles of The Diva Team: No Period Can Hold Us Back!

When it comes to memorable moments in our lives, everybody has a story. Whether it is a birthday party that went hilariously awry or an inspiring moment of self-discovery, there is always something we can think back on and say, “I learned something that day.” At Diva, with a team largely composed of women (and a few awesome, open-minded men), you can bet that we have stories to share but with one twist: Periods.

According to recent research, there are 3.52 billion women in the world (and we all know that it isn’t just women who menstruate) which means that there is an endless supply of period stories from all over the world. And while we have yet to hear all of these inspiring stories – though, we are all ears – our team had a few we had to share!

Prepare to be laugh, cringe and be inspired because life goes on. Period.

I remember I had a big interview scheduled for my dream job, and I prepared for days. I was excited and a little nervous the night before the interview so I drank some chamomile tea and went to bed early. I wanted to be well rested and alert for my big day. I checked my alarm clock to make sure it was set at least three times, and finally, hit the hay.

The morning of my interview, I woke up with a churning feeling in my stomach. Of course, it was my period… of course! I was doubled over in the bathroom minutes after waking up. It was full blown, floodgates wide open, right from the get-go. I could feel my focus and my confidence leaving my body along with my uterine lining.

I knew I had to pull it together. There was no way I was going to let a little blood stop me from landing this role. I ransacked my bathroom drawer for some Midol, popped two, took a shower, and got ready. I put on my perfectly ironed dress pants, a crisp white blouse, a pair of heels that made me feel like a damn rock star and a bright red blazer and walked out the door with my head high. I may be bleeding, but I can still slay.

My sister got married when I was still in my freshman year of University and she asked me to be her maid of honor. For an 18-year-old, being a maid of honor was a really big deal for me and it was going to be my first go at taking on a job like this. My sister was really into the swing dance scene at the time so the whole wedding party was decked out in lounge lizard style.

thedivacup-bigday-period-bloodMy dress was a skin-tight beaded affair in grays, blues, and silvers. It took three fittings and a lot of work to take it in and make it fit perfectly. Of course, Murphy’s law being what it is, I got my period the night before my sister’s wedding.

When I menstruate I retain a lot of water and this caused my second-skin-like to be too small in all my menstruating glory. No matter what I tried, it would not close. Plus, since it was entirely beaded, there was nothing the seamstress could do to fix it. So there I was, in tears over a silly dress, trying to come up with any other option when I should have been perfecting my speech and enjoying the excitement of the day.

In the end my stressed-out-bride of a sister was the voice of reason, and suggested I buy another dress. I went to a local store the morning of my sister’s wedding and bought a dress that was on sale. The women at the store were kind enough to do minor adjustments and I rushed out of their to store to wedding with time to spare.

And even though I was menstruating, and not in the dress I had planned, life went on and it was amazing! I had an incredible experience and everything went on without a hitch.

Four years ago I started a new journey in my life: college. During my first year, my professors often spoke of our final “capstone” project, that would take up much of our time in the final year of our degree and determine whether we would pass or fail our program. With a year left before I graduated, the word “capstone” began to haunt
me.thedivacup-bigday-period-blood

When it finally came down to my last semester, I was responsible for conducting thorough research, talking to the clients and establishing a plan that would work for their
business. On top of my scholarly responsibilities, I was also working part-time and meeting with my mentor. To say it was a stressful semester would be an understatement.

Finally, the big day had arrived. The final presentation. Four years of hard work and dedication later I was about to complete the project that could determine my future. And then, it happened.

I awoke to a pulsing in my stomach and aches in my back and legs. I thought to myself, “NO, this cannot be happening! Not now!” But of course, I woke up to blood in my underwear. Not only did I have an incredibly important presentation to worry about, but now I had to try and relieve my cramps AND hope that I could keep myself together long enough to pass my program!

After a few minutes of panic, I took some medication for my cramps and focused all my energy and effort on my presentation.

The result? I passed!

I had turned the beautiful white chair cover into a deep shade of menstrual blood red.At 15 years old, I had barely had my period for a year and I was about to learn the hard way that periods
don’t always play nice.

I had been invited to my then-boyfriend’s sister’s wedding which was a HUGE deal because it was my first “non-family” wedding and I desperately wanted to make a good impression. As a self-proclaimed tomboy, my initial worry was, “I have nothing to wear!” Thank goodness for girlfriends that love clothing as I was able to raid my friend’s closet and find something to fit my style.

When the big day came I was feeling good in my chunky black heels and black mini skirt. Since my boyfriend was in the wedding party, I ended up being my own date and spent most of the evening getting to know my boyfriend’s extended family. As we filed into the reception hall for dinner, I admired the beautifully decorated venue with twinkling lights, pale green tulle and crisp white chair covers. Cue the foreboding music.

After several hours of sitting, I stood to go to the ladies room and was quickly pulled back down by the Aunt I had been getting to know.  Quietly, and with a level of panic in her eyes, she notified me that I had turned the beautiful white chair cover into a deep shade of menstrual blood red.

Luckily, the Aunt/fairy godmother helped me cover up the blood-stained chair as I shuffled out and along the back wall to clean up. Thank goodness for black skirts.

By this point, my face was as bright red as that newly decorated chair cover. When I returned, the table the chair had mysteriously disappeared and was replaced with a plastic seat.

Now, here I am, over twenty years later, still good friends with my teenage boyfriend, and though he still doesn’t know what happened that mortifying day, his wife and I have had a few good laughs over the story.

As a competitive horseback rider,  championships are the ultimate end goal. They mean that all of your (and

your horse’s) hard work has been validated. It means that all of those times you said, “Sorry, I can’t. I have to go ride” are now worth something. It can also be really scary.

When I found out that my horse and I had qualified for champs, I was ecstatic. I probably hugged my horse a thousand times. I spent all of my free time prepping and training so that we would be unstoppable on competition day.

But the world is a cruel place.

The night before champs, I couldn’t sleep. I knew that I had to wake up at 3 AM to prepare for the competition and naively thought that it was the nerves keeping me up. Until I felt that familiar ache in my side.

I remember walking to the bathroom and praying that I was being paranoid, but of course, I wasn’t. My period had arrived. Instantly, I started doing the calculations. In three hours I would be putting on skin tight, beige breeches and hurling my horse and myself over 3-foot fences. Would my cramps be bad? Would I feel light-headed? Oh no, what if I leak?

After a few minutes of panic and then a few more feeling sorry for myself, I decided there was no way I was giving in. If my horse could jump around a course for me than I could handle my period for a day for her.

It ended up being a fantastic day. And although I had my Mom and coach on leak patrol, I felt completely confident going into the ring. My horse and I pulled out all the stops and ended up placing 6th out of over 40 horses. Just goes to show that you really can do anything while on your period.

Party On. Period.

We all know the feeling – that moment that makes you reach for The DivaCup and want to devour a bar of chocolate simultaneously. It’s called a period and it is a normal, albeit sometimes inconvenient, part of life.

For some people, periods can mean pulling on a pair of sweatpants, putting on your favourite movie and zoning out for a couple days. Though periods can be a great excuse to spend time relaxing on your own, you shouldn’t feel compelled to hide from the world for days on end just because you’re bleeding. Which, since we are on the topic, is why we’ve compiled a list of fun things you should most definitely try while on your period.

FUN PERIOD ACTIVITIES

Go out and have the time of your life. Just because your uterus is being the ultimate frenemy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take her out with some friends and dance the night away.

Play board games and eat candy. Not feeling a night out? Invite your friends over, play your favourite board game (maybe something period-related?) and pig out on all the candy you want. We know, we know – candy isn’t exactly carrot sticks and hummus but being healthy is all about balance right?

Meet someone new. Whether you have a book club meeting or your friend invited you over for a fun period activities the divacuphousewarming party, making new friends is a sure fire way to enjoy your night, even if you happen to be on your period.

Get stuff done. Have you been feeling the urge to organize your closet by colour or you need to finish a project before its deadline, there is no time like the present to be a boss girl and handle it. After all, just because you are bleeding doesn’t mean you aren’t as capable as ever!

Whatever the heck you want! You are an incredible Diva who can bleed while she does anything! Why let your period stop you from making the most of every second of your wild and beautiful life?

The most important thing to remember is that no matter whether you are on period or not, you should never stop trying new things or being the Diva that we know you are! Because, after all, life doesn’t stop because of your period.

What are some of you favourite activities to do while on your period? Share them with us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram!

Diary of a Diva: Living the Green Life

Hi there!

I am 30 years old and like many other women I started out with pads early on. I remember in middle school, pads with wings were not a common product to come by. As one could imagine, it was always an accident waiting to happen. Later, I “graduated” to wings and thought “WHERE HAVE THESE BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!” Then came the challenge of summer and as young ladies know the combination of PE, summer, and being on your period are the perfect storm for paranoia. Asking your friends to check your pants for leaks became the norm or even tying a sweater around your waist (it’s interesting that it’s become a throwback fashion trend). Fast forward to the college years, I finally decided I was grown up enough to move on to tampons. Growing up in a Latin family there were always talk about how only women that are no longer virgins could use tampons. I went ahead with it nervously. I recalled my first attempt at trying a tampon when I was 13 years old, I tried it because one of my best friends at the time used them and I wanted to be cool and try to as well. To save you the trouble, I had no idea what I was doing and I gave up.

At age 21, there I was reading the pamphlet and determined to make this work for me and then SUCCESS! This felt like a godsend. I could finally work out and go about my day without worry. Well, as time went on I realized that having to change one out every 3-4 hours started to became a hassle. Sometimes I wasn’t around a restroom and what if I had to pee?! I had friends tell me they could pee with one on and I thought, “Well there must be something wrong with my anatomical structure because that has never been the case for me.” I accepted it for years and just went on as usual.

A few years later, I remember a friend bringing up the idea of menstrual cups and I immaturely replied, “EW!” I later saw the error of my response and apologized. To be honest the idea of a menstrual cup just gave me the “willies” so I put it behind me. Then, in 2015, I discovered there was a huge cyst on my ovary that led to the removal of the entire ovary. After that my cycle continued on schedule but I then decided to switch to organic cotton tampons since I became hyper aware of the products I was using. I still didn’t feel right even though it was organic. I remembered that previous conversation about the menstrual cup and decided “What the hell, why not?” I purchased The DivaCup and immediately went home and watched the company’s YouTube videos about how to use it, and then I cracked my knuckles and said, “Let’s do this.”

I found the push-down fold to be the easiest and much to my surprise it was easy. Now the question was would it hold up? I tried it on a relaxed weekend and left it in for a normal work day length of time (8 hours) and YES!!! The DivaCup WORKED! No spill, no accidents, no discomfort. I could use the restroom like normal, it had no harmful ingredients, was easy-to-care-for, eco-friendly, AND I could do my fitness routine and not have to worry about it at all!

I became a DivaCup convert for LIFE!!!

#DivaDifference Winner: Empowerment, Love and Education

The Diva team is happy to announce the winner of our #DivaDifference campaign! Amanda is an outstanding woman dedicated to encouraging young adults to pursue their goals. She is a passionate community leader, mother and teacher who embodies the characteristics of a true Diva!

img_3598I’m Amanda Harris, a 23-year-old wife, mother, and student. I have had an adventurous 23 years of life; this year has been the most pivotal and the most representative of how I am making a #DivaDifference and plan to continue to do so for many more years.

The parts of my life that I think exemplify this are my pursuit of a Masters of Arts in Teaching, my journey of adopting my son, and steadily being active in volunteering within my community. I have been a proud Diva user for 15 months now, and can’t help but contemplate how my journey with The Diva Cup has empowered me this past year as a woman and an influential person within my family and community. I graduated from Arkansas State University in 2014 with a B.S.E in Psychology; my original plan was to work in the Industrial Organizational field pending the completion of a Master’s program. However, upon graduation I stayed at the same job – bookkeeping for a local farmer. I stayed because it was comfortable, the pay was satisfactory, and I truly enjoyed the people I worked for and with. However, my passion wasn’t fulfilled and I always yearned for a career that I directly benefited the community.

I started using The Diva Cup and went through an empowerment journey that I wish I had experienced upon my entrance to womanhood many years ago. I explored my anatomy, gained confidence in my body, and learned to take control and understand my menstrual options. I overcame the stigma of menstruation and helped normalize the conversation with my friends and family.

My Diva journey inspired me to start mentoring young girls, to make a difference sooner in the lives of young women. Too many things in society place unrealistic expectations on young women regarding their image, body, and behaviors. I aim to help young women realize they are beautiful the way they are and to set their own standards for themselves by empowering them with the ability to make their own decisions. As I began to think about how to make the biggest impact on young lives, I realized where I needed to be – in schools.

After doing a 6-month volunteer sabbatical with my husband, my passions came to fruition. I volunteered 40 hours a week at a local non-divadifference profit where my job responsibilities included coordinating a mentoring program and daily tutoring at after school sessions. I learned three very important things from this experience. I discovered that community involvement/volunteering would always be a regular part of my life, time with family was invaluable, and that my husband and I wished to pursue adoption. I had met a sweet foster child during this time and got insight into the immense need for more foster and adoptive parents within the
United States as well as the need for good educators. I’m so thrilled to say that as of July 31st I am now a mom to a wonderful 7-year-old little boy and a graduate student pursuing a teaching degree.

As of last week, I have started my journey towards a Masters of Arts in Teaching. I plan to make a lasting #DivaDifference by empowering the young adults of our community from the classroom. I also volunteer regularly with my husband and son at our local soup kitchen as our way of giving back to the community. This #DivaDifference award would help substantially with my school costs and help me to continually focus and work towards being the best model of a mother, teacher, and community leader.

Congratulations again to Amanda! We at Diva International Inc. are wishing you much success in the future!

7 Wonders of the Vagina

7 Wonders of the vagina The DivaCup

Vaginas are fascinating; there is no doubt about it. Sometimes, fascination can grow in part due to mystery surrounding the object of one’s fascination. Vaginas are no stranger to this phenomena and it is part of the reason why we have decided to break down some of the mystery, taboo, and stigma about the vagina with #GetVagucated. Here are the top 7 wonders of the vagina, unveiled.

1. The Hymen The hymen is truly a wonder (or even a mystery) of the vagina. In many current and historic cultures, the hymen was believed to be the marker of virginity. However, many do not understand what the hymen actually is or even what it looks like. The hymen is simply a small piece of tissue that rings around the vaginal opening. The hymen can break during penetration, or it can stretch . Some women are born with very thin hymens, others with no hymen at all. Some hymens break during rigorous activities like sports. With all this variation, history, and a cloud of mystery surrounding its existence (or lack thereof), the hymen is most certainly in the top 7 wonders of the vagina.7 Wonder of the Vagina The DivaCup

2. The Vagina Belongs To a Whole System of Awesome

Even the title of this blog post is technically wrong – but it sure caught your attention, didn’t it? In fact, many are not aware that the vagina is only one part of the entire female reproductive system and that there is a difference between the internal and external parts. Often, many use the term vagina to refer to their entire “down there” lady bits. What many women don’t know is that the vagina is an elastic, muscular tube
only about three (3) – four (4) inches (8-10 cm) long
and it does not connect to other parts of the body. Other noteworthy and anatomically correct names for the other parts include the clitoris, the inner and outer labia, and the perineum.

3. The Clitoris

No list of the wonders of female reproductive anatomy would be complete without mention of the clitoris. The orgasm powerhouse. The clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings and most women require clitoral stimulation to achieve orgasm. The clitoris is the only organ whose sole existence is for pleasure. Even more interesting is the origins of this little button of pleasure. Did you know that the penis and clitoris basically start out the same way during a fetus’s development? It is only at about 6 weeks of gestation that each organ begins to form based on chromosomes. In fact, the labia majora would become the scrotum and the labia minora would form the shaft of the penis.

4. The Muscle

The vaginal canal itself is made of some very elastic muscle and tissues that are designed to stretch and return back to its normal size. In fact, the vagina can stretch to up to 200% its normal size and return back to normal. Vaginas are designed this way to be able to stretch to deliver a baby (should one wish to deliver a child vaginally, of course… you do you). After intercourse or childbirth, the tissue returns back to its normal size, however, it is the muscles of the vaginal canal that usually need to be strengthened after childbirth using exercises like Kegels (under the supervision of a pelvic health specialist). Most often, young women do not need to do Kegels as this can create muscles that are too strong or tense. Contrary to popular belief, Kegels do not necessarily make sex better and having a “tight” vagina can even be problematic in some cases. For more information about Kegels and strengthening your pelvic floor, check out our Q&A with a pelvic health physiotherapist.

5. Orgasms7 Wonders of the Vagina The DivaCup Orgasm
Orgasms are a wonderful, magical thing and that is why we are including them in our 7 wonders of the vagina. When a woman orgasms, the muscles in her vagina contract. Those of us who are the proud owner of a vagina can often orgasm multiple times. Orgasms are a powerful painkiller. They can help to alleviate menstrual cramps and interestingly enough, may help reduce feelings of depression in women by producing feel good hormones.

6. Good Guy Bacteria

This may sound like an odd wonder, but trust us, bacteria is incredibly wondrous as far as the vagina is concerned. The vagina is a delicate and balanced ecosystem that contains bacteria which are used to clean the vagina and keep the pH balance in check. Fun fact: your vaginal fluid is made of carbs, amino acids, proteins and other lactobacillus bacteria. Also, the pH balance of your vagina is the same of a glass of wine. Cheers to that!

7. The Cervix

The cervix is a small, donut-shaped opening that connects your vagina and your uterus. If you so happen to birth a child vaginally, the cervix dilates to about 3.9 inches (or about 10 centimeters) to allow the passage of a child. Women can be born with more than one cervix, which is a medical condition known as uterus didelphys. If you have more than one cervix, you have multiple cervices (which is the actual plural form of the word cervix!). If you’re not sure what a cervix looks like, check out this awesome collection of actual images of cervices.

Diary of a Diva: From Peace Corps to Conservation

When I committed to joining Peace Corps Morocco in June of 2014, I received a packing list that included, among other things, The DivaCup. I had used similar products in the past but was never very pleased with the results often I had trouble with leaking or had to empty and clean the item several times a day. I knew that tampons would be difficult to come by in Morocco, so before I left, I purchased The DivaCup and hoped for the best.
Peace-Corps

Since that time, I’ve traveled the world and am so happy to have The DivaCup.

During my time in Morocco, I worked at a women’s center teaching aerobics, English, world culture and cooking classes. More than 30 women attended these daily classes, learning things like how to prepare healthy meals, the English lyrics to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” or how to salsa dance. Over the course of my 30 months of service in Morocco, my students and I developed wonderful relationship and shared our cultures, recipes, and music with each other.

Frequently, however, my students would bow out of attending aerobics or dance classes because they were on their periods. In Morocco, this means a week or more of using pads because tampons are completely unavailable. Many of the rural women I worked with would rip the absorptive pads out of diapers and use those, because they were far cheaper than the name-brand pads available at stores.

While my students had to creatively negotiate running, playing basketball or doing fitness classes while menstruating, I was able to keep teaching week after week, thanks to The DivaCup.

The DivaCup also made travel incredibly easy. I vacationed in Europe during my time of service, spending two weeks in Greece, Spain and Italy, and The DivaCup made those journeys so much easier (and cheaper!) than if I’d had to rely on tampons. Even traveling throughout Morocco – when I often had to spend 12+ hours on a bus to get from my home town to the south for work – I was able to rely on The DivaCup.

Divacup-Diary-Peace-Corps-Sea-TurtleAfter my position ended in Morocco, I immediately came to volunteer with a project protecting loggerhead sea turtles in Cabo Verde, a small island nation in west Africa.

Conservation is the name of the game here: we flush the toilets with sea water, as the only fresh water on the island is desalinated and very expensive. We reuse everything, from rope found on the shore (we use it to separate nests in the hatchery) to peanut butter jars (used to hold clothes pins, flipper tags, and so much more).

The DivaCup is especially important to me here, because not only are tampons very expensive, but the small island of Sal has limited landfill facilities, and I would hate to be filling it up with bleached cotton and cardboard applicators.

Thanks to The DivaCup, I am able to live an eco-conscious lifestyle while helping to protect an incredible, endangered species.

Victoria A.

50 Reasons to Diva

We know that there are hundreds of reasons to switch to The DivaCup, but don’t just take our word for it. We asked thousands of users what their reason for using The DivaCup was. Below are our top 50 favorite reasons!

1) Spend less on your period so you can spend more on things that matter
With a large family, I need to save every penny I can. Buying this item cuts the cost of feminine care products for my cycles down to nothing for a long time. Not having to spend money each month on care items saves over $100 a year. This doesn’t include the cost that I am saving on laundry for not having to bleed through any of my clothing. Also this is the best menstrual cup I’ve used! The quality of the product is unbeatable, reliable, and easy to get the hang of using. I love using the Diva Cup.~ Ashley T

2) Do what you want, when you want
An Alternative to conventional Pads and Tampons that allow a woman to be more active, and free to do what they want when they want regardless of their cycle. You are not chained by your cycle if you break free with the Diva Cup! Thank you for the opportunity to use this product that is innovative and something every woman should try!~ Sandi

3) People with heavy flows rejoice!
Periods are never a fun time. If you have a heavy flow you can be changing tampons and pads constantly. At time you have to wear both causing havoc with your daily life. If you have kids and a family you are limited with the things you can go and do. With this product you all your options open. The product will leaving you worry free for hours at a time. This leaves your day open to go out and explore and play with the little ones. They are also very hygienic and you are never worried about leakage or odor.~ Angie H

4) No bathroom, no problem!
As one of two girls on a construction crew working mostly surrounded by cornfields and no bathroom, this product is a lifesaver. Its rare that there is anywhere to throw garbage on the jobsite and you have saved me from being forced to choose between polluting or toting my used tampons around. Simple and safe! The guys on the job are thankful I don’t take a break every two hours and I’m thankful I no longer have to pack tampons around in my tool belt. Score for the working women.~ Annabelle L

5) The end to inconvenient leaks
For years I used tampons. Decades, really. (Dang) For 5 days every month, I had to stay close to bathrooms, keep my purse stocked and pray for no leaks. I travel. I run half marathons. Inevitably those 5 days would fall on inconvenient times, and I would experience inconvenient leaks. But now?? I get to forget about my period for 12 hours at a time. 12 WHOLE HOURS!! No leaks, no dry tampons (you know what I mean!), no extra trash going out in landfills, no stocking my purse with tampons. I actually feel like I’m forgetting something. Nice, right? ~ Mary S

6) It changes your relationship with your period… for the better!
The Diva Cup has changed the way I view my period. After having my son, tampons were excruciating to remove, even in heavy days. Plus, I would overflow almost daily. Now, I can go all day, run a 5k, drive 500 miles and even go camping without worrying about having my period. I have not ruined a set of sheets in years! I even gave a detailed 5* review on Amazon (A.B.Gibbs). I don’t mind being a lady as much thanks to the Diva Cup. I just wish I had found it sooner! ~ AmyBeth G

7) Empowers you, empowers your daughters
I use the Diva Cup to encourage my 3 daughters. My oldest was having bad cramps and I researched natural remedies. Using reusable products was one suggestion! I ran to the store and bought 2 Diva Cups. I LOVE that it’s safe for my daughters (no TSS or chemicals leaching into their bodies)! It has opened up more dialogue between us (we discuss folds, comfort, and how much we’ve bled)! It has empowered my daughters to feel “in control” of their periods, as well as develop a better understanding of their bodies!~ Barbara R

8) Be more confident during the least confident time of the month
I use the diva cup because it allows me to be more confident at my least confident time of the month. I don’t have to worry about embarassing leaks and I can go on without dreading the 1 week of the month that I have dreaded since I was a teen. Thanks for giving my confidence back to me. ~ Toma R

9) PCOS was cramping my style. The DivaCup was on fleek
For my physical and emotional health. I have PCOS and my periods have become unbearable since my diagnosis. I’m trying to become healthy in all aspects of my life and read that traditional tampons can cause your period and symptoms to worsen. After transitioning to the cup I’ve noticed a huge difference in my period! It’s lighter and the cramps have eased up a bit as well. This has been a huge improvement on me emotionally as my periods have been debilitating. I’m extremely happy with the choice to change and I’ll never go back to using tampons again. I love my DivaCup! ~ Hollie T

10) Bye bye allergies to disposables!
As tampon companies started using different products to absorb more, I found myself terribly allergic and getting worse. During cycles I had to put barrier creams on and take benedryl, then would still end up with an infection. Finally I heard about Diva Cup and it changed my life! After telling my Gyno she said she has many other people having similar reactions. I printed the info from your website and it is now hanging in the clinic room! ~ Jesika F

11) Scent free and easy for me!
So many things to love about the Diva Cup!! I love that there is no perfume and no ingredients that can hurt or harm me. It’s gentle and easy to insert and to remove. There is no period scent when using it (you know the smell, from pads and tampons) and you can have it inserted a lot longer than you can with tampons. Easy to clean and comes with a cute sack to store it in. I also really love that it’s not wasteful! I recommend the Diva Cup whole heartedly. ~ Julissa H

12) I can live a normal life
It may be TMI but I have having MONTHLY vaginal infections. MONTHLY. It was miserable. They were so bad the doctor actually told me it was the worst they’ve seen and I had to take time off of work. I went to multiple doctors and no one could figure out why. I was on high doses of medicines to help to no avail. When I got pregnant the infections stopped. I had my baby and when my cycle started again so did the infections. I switched to a diva cup… Haven’t had an infection since. Apparently something in tampons was triggering infections for me. The DivaCup has been more than a convince to me. It has helped me so much so I can live a normal life. ~ Tiffany

13) A better planet for my kids and a better period for me
I began using the Diva cup as one of the things I can do to help leave my children a better planet, by reducing waste. After I used it for a few months I love it because I have no leaks and my cramping has greatly diminished as well. I love that this is a option that I can give to my daughter in a few years and feel good knowing there is no toxic chemicals in it, in addition to all of the other benefits of the Diva Cup, Thank you! ~ Brenda

14) Never waking up to blood stained sheets again
With the DivaCup I no longer need to worry about what position I sleep in. While using pads, I would always have to be careful in how I perched myself every night; one wrong move would result in a leak. Sometimes my careful planning didn’t even pan out– I would still wake up in the middle of the night with that feeling of horror every person with a period has felt. Switching to the DivaCup meant that I didn’t have to do that anymore! I can sleep on my back, side, belly, any way, and still be comfortable and leak-free! ~Amanda S

15) Freedom from the tyranny of the period
The Diva Cup has changed the way I feel about my period forever. I used to dread it, but now it’s like any other day or time in my life. I switched to the Diva Cup initially for environmental reasons but I got a new lease on life when I switched. I used to wear a tampon and a pad together for very heavy flow and still have to change every 3-4 hours. Now on heavy days I can go at least 6-8 hours without emptying my cup and 12 hours on light days. The DivaCup has given me freedom. ~ Raegan F

16) Active Lifestyle -Without Harsh Chemicals
I can’t use tampons and pads are horrible. The DivaCup gave me my life back. With pads I can’t go to the gym and kill it on leg day; with The DivaCup I can leg press 125 and squat 90 with NO LEAKS! Pads make it impossible to go to the beach or canoe, I don’t have to worry about that with The DivaCup. The Diva Cup let’s me keep my active lifestyle without harsh chemicals and cotton. The best part, I’m not sick my entire period and my clots aren’t the size of a half dollar. ~ Amanda N

17) Travel…ANYTravelWHERE!
The moment I realized I would never go back from The DivaCup was when I was traveling across Europe and ended up getting my period. At that time I didn’t use The DivaCup so I had to scramble to find a solution in a foreign place. Now, I can throw The DivaCup  in a bag anytime I travel whether across the state or across the globe and be prepared. ~ Heidi

18) Feeling comfortable in my own skin
I love The DivaCup because it makes me not only feel comfortable in my own skin, even after having a baby, but it allows me to be comfortable with our anatomy as women. It is not only a matter of making my periods easier to manage, with a toddler running around and also working for myself but its owning my own health and fertility! It’s taking matters into my own hands and allowing myself to enjoy life even during the menstrual flow! <3 Not being stopped, limited or held back during any part of the month! We are Limitless! ~ Jill

19) Doctor recommended
My doctor recommended The DivaCup and I can’t be happier with his suggestion. It is very easy to use but it does take some practice. It has made my period easier to deal with and traveling during my period a breeze. It has saved me money and stress. I would and do recommend it to everyone. ~ Angela L

20) Free from hormones
I had an IUD for 5 years. When the 5 year limit approached, I got it removed and got The DivaCup for my menstrual care. Not having a period for 5 years was awesome, don’t get me wrong, but I wanted to be free of the chemicals, hormones and the affects of birth control. With The DivaCup, having a period is hardly noticeable to me, not to mention the money it saves! It’s been almost 1 year and I have no regrets and don’t look back! I recommend The DivaCup  any time “monthly” period topics come up. ~ Crystal

21) The best option for Perimenopause
When you get to my age, your last days of having a period are totally unpredictable. It could be a light flow for a few days but then be heavy. Before switching, I used to have to wear a jacket wrapped around my waist it case I was leaking. What a mess!! My daughters told me about The DivaCup. I don’t have the worry now and I wish The DivaCup was around when I was younger. They’re comfortable and dependable. Like a best friend. ~ Helen G

22) Leaving no trace
The utter convenience and durability of The DivaCup cannot be overstated. I love that The DivaCup lasts a year, that it is easily transportable, and that it’s perfect for outdoor adventures. I cannot imagine bringing a bunch of tampons with me while backpacking, camping, or hiking. Not to mention, living by the “leave no trace” philosophy while out on the trails means packing all of your trash with you. I’m so thankful for The DivaCup because it makes it easy to live by my values and ethics. ~ Adalia

23) A New Mom Life-Saver
As a new, first time mom, I am constantly on the go caring for my little girl. She is 7 months old and my period just came back – with a vengeance! Luckily, I found The DivaCup! It can handle my new heavy flow AND it is much more convenient and cost effective to use. And these days, I am all about saving time and money. Not to mention, it is earth-friendly, which is helping make the world a better place for my little one! There are more than #50reasonstoDiva, and mine is that it is a new mom life-saver! ~ Alison W

24) Appreciating my body
I am a HUGE advocate for The DivaCup. I tell all my friends about it! After I had my first period using The DivaCup I knew I would never go back to tampons OR pads. I have used The DivaCup for over a year and it has honestly has changed my life! I have super heavy periods and would use a super tampon AND a overnight maxi pad. The DivaCup has made my period 100% less terrible! Also, the financial benefits are amazing! I love my body more through The DivaCup experience. Thank you to The DivaCup for changing periods forever. ~ Adrienne C

25) Control and Dignity!
I went through life with an undiagnosed, blood disorder; it would have been fine if I had not been a female (menstruation) and suffering a major injury while overseas (which almost killed me). Complications from my injury lead to severe anaemia and heavy haemorrhaging; I could not clot and suffered through 3-6 weeks of constant bleeding, physical pain and infections related to tampons/pads and emotional/mental exhaustion (depression). The DivaCup that gave me hope; it helped me look after myself, aware of my body, prevented constant infections and it was comfortable. I felt like I had control and dignity once more. ~ Aliva D

26) No longer ashamed
My period was never normalized to me. From the very first one, it was something I tried to hide. Because of this I was always ill prepared, always ruining underwear, always making a mess. The DivaCup has changed my life. The DivaCup has finally made me feel normal. I feel clean, confident, in control of my body. 23 years of shame gone. Thank you!!!!! ~ Robin J

27) Freedom on the roadRoad
I work as a truck driver and nothing in the job has been hard to deal with as my period has been. I’m surrounded by guys and it is always awkward to ask for a bathroom every half hour. The DivaCup has given me the freedom I never thought I could have. I can go to work and just do my ‘thang’ as normal as I can,  without even a worry. I have even got my fellow female truckers on board and they are also impressed. This is a game changer 🙂 ~ Samantha H

28) Focused while living life on the edge
It’s 7:00am and I insert The DivaCup. My climbing partner and I pack our gear and hike to the cliff. We spend an entire day on the wall climbing 600 feet of limestone. There are a few moments where my foot is above me head and I almost poop my pants trying to make my next move. After a successful day of climbing we arrive back at the campsite it’s 7pm back at the campsite. I empty, clean, and reinsert The DivaCup. Glad that’s one thing I didn’t have to think about today. #50ReasonsToDiva ~ Victoria F

29) Anxiety-free period!
My period has always been a time of anxiety for me, from the leaks to the smells to ‘oh my god I’ve been sitting in this lecture for two hours, what if I have a red spot on my pants when I stand up!!?!?!?’
I was recommended The DivaCup by a friend, took her advice and am now far beyond ever looking back. The DivaCup has granted me such relief, and allowed me to finally stop stressing over the dreaded red week of the month. Thank you, to The DivaCup, for letting me live in peace. ~ Rose L

30) Treating my vagina with respect
I use a menstrual cup because I love my body and everything it’s blessed me with. I want to treat my vagina with respect and care. I want to know that my periods will be as comfortable as possible. I have PCOS and with menstruation always came unbearable cramping and discomfort. Switching to The DivaCup was life changing. No leaks, barely any cramping and $$$$ saved every month! I spread the word whenever the opportunity comes up. I wish someone would have introduced me to The DivaCup earlier! ~ Hannah H

31) Helped with the emotional battle
Trying to conceive can be exhausting. Month after month, your very unwelcomed period makes its appearance. It can turn your menstrual cycle into an emotional battle. I loved The DivaCup during the time we were trying to conceive. I can forget about it for up to 12 hours at a time, not being reminded of another failed month. I don’t have to run to the store to buy tampons and stand around the feminine wellness aisle when I’d rather be checking out baby gear. Now that I’ve conceived, I’ll need a size 2 soon! ~ Tara W

32) Helped this endo sufferer suffer a little less
I’ve suffered from endometriosis for over 10 years. There were times when putting in and taking out a tampon would be terribly painful. In addition, I wore tampons A LOT because of irregular cycles. I was always worried about toxic shock syndrome. Enter: The DivaCup. I was hesitant, but this weekend, rather than buying another box of tampons, I finally bought The DivaCup. I popped that sucker in and immediately went to the gym; hey, no guts no glory! NO LEAKS! TOTAL COMFORT! NO PAIN! I’m amazed and a total convert. Thank you for helping this endo sufferer suffer a little less! ~ Jennifer

33) No longer hating on my period
I used to hate my period. I had hellish periods every month and tampons were the worst. Since making the switch to The DivaCup three years ago, I am much more friendly with the monthly beast. I love that I can go for hours and hours before I have to take it out (which helps as a teacher when I get very limited bathroom breaks). I especially love that I make one purchase each year and spend half as much. Making the switch was one of the best decisions and I love telling my friends how I made the switch! ~ Alexandra L

34) Set it and forget it
Being a plus sized woman is no fun when you’re on your period. Tampons never really felt right and I would experience leaks with pads because they just don’t cover enough real estate (if you know what I mean). It’s as if my menstrual blood defied the laws of physics. In all of my years of experiencing periods, I had never had an accident free period. Not until The DivaCup. With The DivaCup, I don’t have to worry about an awkward fit or leaks. It’s like a crock pot. I just set it and forget it. ~ Vanessa B

35) Who has time for bathroom breaks?
I’m a social worker so working in homes of families in my community leave little time for bathroom breaks. With The DivaCup, I focus on my client’s needs; not my need to change feminine products constantly. I took my stash of disposable feminine products to a local women’s shelter, so you not only helped me, but women in my community. I experience less cramping, which helps me to be fully present for my clients and my own family, and has given me a quality of life I never thought possible for one week each month. I’m so thankful. ~ Sarah S

36) Plastic fSearee from the sea and for me!
I was on vacation, visiting the Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key, FL when I observed first-hand how destructive disposable products are to aquatic life and the environment. Beaches were littered with tampon applicators, but even worse – I learned sea animals often mistook these applicators for food causing their digestive tracks to be blocked, often resulting in death. There had to be a better way. An Internet search led me to The DivaCup. It is both eco-friendly for the sea (reusable!) and safe for me (medical-grade silicone + no chemicals). I took the bait and now I’m hooked! ~ Kristen L

37) Focus on my patients, not my period
As a busy nurse, The DivaCup has been my saving grace. I no longer have to worry about finding break times to deal with my periods, and my mind is at ease during my (sometimes very long) commutes. The confidence I have in The DivaCup is outstanding. I know I can deal with my period once in the morning and not even have to think about it during my shift, meaning my focus can be on my patients. The DivaCup is discreet, sanitary, and cost effective. I recommend them to everyone! ~ Rebecca N

38) A year of freedom
I was very skeptical when I started using The DivaCup. I watched a bunch of videos and emailed the support team. With a little practice, it took me a few cycles to be a confident Diva user. I’m proud to say it’s been a year of freedom! No more bulky pads or leaky tampons! I’ve saved so much money and gained so much! ~ Serena L

39) Adventure without the hassle
As an ultra trail runner I would be running through the woods on a mountain for 30, 50, 100+ miles. I often chose races and my training runs based on my cycle because being in the middle of no where, on an exposed ridge line or for hours away from everything did not make dealing with my period easy. Thanks to The DivaCup I don’t have to wonder how I’ll deal with my cycle and all that used to go along with it. ~ Shelly C

40) From heavy bleeding to forgetting my period
I have had the worst periods since I first started — heavy bleeding, excessively long and extremely painful. Since switching to The DivaCup, the first two don’t impact me as much. I can almost forget I’m having my period and go about my daily business without worrying that I need to change my pad or tampon. ~ Brittney J

41) For swimming and happy memories
I use The DivaCup for freedom. Being a lifeguard and water safety instructor, I’ve always had worries about tampons failing and leaking. I’ve had it happen and it’s a horribly embarrassing event. With The DivaCup properly inserted, I no longer worry. I’m free to enjoy swimming and making happy memories for young girls too. ~ Asa P

42) Better for country living
My family moved to the country and we have a septic system so I was having to throw ALL period related waste away. The DivaCup is so easy, much more sanitary, and there’s no more trash so it’s better for the environment too! ~ Cindy F
Freedom

I diva because after having three gorgeous little girls, I wanted to find a safer alternative to disposable options. I’d love to pass all of my feminine health successes on to my girls in the future! It does get better ladies! With The DivaCup, I no longer worry about packing those terrible pads and tampons! I am not running to the bathroom every hour either. You know what I am talking about!! Change the way you see your period! ~ Amanda K

45) One reason? I have 10!
10 reasons why I switched to The DivaCup: Money saving! Environmentally friendly! Canadian-made product! No pads sticking to me anymore! No more stains on underwear! Long time between changes! No odors! Lady parts stay clean! No leaking! Don’t have to wear underwear to bed anymore! No more sleeping on towels! YAY for The DivaCup! ~ Stacy

46) Hope for heavy periods
After my son’s delivery (10lbs 6 oz), I noticed my periods became super heavy. I would go through a Super tampon in an hour during my heaviest time, which made sleep impossible. Luckily, I came across The DivaCup and hoped it would be the answer to my prayers, and it was! What do I Love about The DivaCup? I love that it can hold more volume, that it is environmentally friendly, better for my health (no nasty chemicals), and that it saves me money in the long run. Awesome product 😉 ~ Keri L

47) In with the new
After decades of little change in menstrual products, we finally have another alternative! It’s safe, effective, portable, reusable and replaced ALL other products! Get over the ick factor ladies; it’s YOUR body and it’s time to get to know it better! I hate tampons, they never seem to fit right & pads, ugh no matter how you think they claim to be they ride, bunch and feel like a diaper. The DivaCup is perfect for even my heavy flow days. I can’t feel it and love that I don’t have to keep different products for every day of my cycle! ~ Sunshine

48) It has never failed me
Since I was 12 I have had my period and it has been a painful, complicated experience. My flow is so heavy I leak through the largest tampons and sometimes right through pads. Then I heard a whispering about something called a menstrual cup. After researching in depth I found The DivaCup. When I finally bought it after careful deliberation, I was astounded that I had never heard of the amazing product before. It never failed me. I am no longer scared to leave the house or complete activities because I know I am always protected. Thank you DivaCup! ~ Ashley
Empowerment

49) In tune with my body
There are so many reasons I use The DivaCup–value, ecofriendly, body friendly, cramp reducing, mess free, etc. Out of all those reasons, I think my number one reason is because it allows me to be in tune with my body. When I use conventional menstrual products I feel like I’m applying a band aid to a wound I don’t want to deal with. The DivaCup, on the other hand, gives me the opportunity to connect with my deepest parts and be fully aware of what is going on. There is nothing better than that. ~ Yvonne

50) I can leave the house on heavy days!
I have had very heavy periods for 26 yrs. I was unable to wear tampons for many years due to heavy bleeding. By using The DivaCup I’m able to have a life during my menstrual cycle. It’s such a blessing to be able to leave the house on the heavy days. ~ Maria H

Diary of a Diva: Birthday Diva

birthday

My name is Francine and here is my The DivaCup story.

On Sunday July 31st, 2016 it wasn’t any ordinary day…it was my 48th birthday, and for me, birthdays are very special and need to be celebrated.

On that morning, at Parlee Beach, Shediac, NB, it was going to be a very hot and sticky day but I took comfort in knowing that we had been invited to join our friends for a beautiful day of boating.  It was going to be a glorious b-day and I was really looking forward to the fresh air blowing through my hair and to feeling the salt water on my skin.

On the morning of the 31st, I woke up to my very own personal “birthday gift”: my period! On one hand I was thrilled to go out boating, but on the other, I was worried about having to wear a tampon and about having to change it every few hours without access to a washroom!!

My day had just gone from being TERRIFIC to being DREADFUL. I wanted to cancel our plans at that point, but my husband convinced me it was going to be great day.

My husband and I got ready for our day out on the water! We packed food, drinks and snacks galore, and I decided to run out and get some sanitary supplies for the day! So we rushed out to the drugstore to get my usual stock of tampons and pads. When I was going through the array of choices in feminine hygiene products, I came across The DivaCup. I had heard about The DivaCup before and had even watched a few of the instructional videos. Standing that day in the feminine hygiene section, I decided that this was the day!! I was desperate and I needed something that I could trust and that would last all day even while wearing a bathing suit.

We rushed home and I read The DivaCup instructions carefully and with confidence. I took a long deep breath and inserted the cup… and… to my surprise, it felt very comfortable and I felt very secure. I was so confident in The DivaCup that I even wore a white bathing suit for our excursion.

Once out on the water on the Shediac Bay, our captain decided he would park his boat on the shoreline of Shediac Island alongside a few dozen other boats. Little did I know, my friends had a huge surprise instore for me. My awesome husband and our close friends had organized gigantic beach party on a small Island with 45 of my closest friends there to wish me a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

I was so shocked….I had NO IDEA that they had planned this day for me!! Tears of joy were running down my cheeks while everyone was rushing to greet me on the island. As I approached in-land, there were some beach chairs in a huge circle and a very special chair with my name on it and a Hawaiian lay. Lots of love was felt and I was so touched that all my friends would go through so much trouble for me. I am truly blessed in so many ways.

I had the GREATEST birthday EVER! I even went swimming a few times without being worried about my period whatsoever. When I got home that evening, and it was time to empty the contents of the cup, I have to admit that I was a little worried and concerned about removing The DivaCup but it was easy and I had no problems whatsoever. I was totally impressed with this product.

Thank you to The DivaCup for making my birthday the best one it could be! I consider The DivaCup to be my birthday gift from me to me! I will never go back to pads and tampons. You made my day that much more special knowing I didn’t have to worry and stress out about my period.

I’m a believer in The DivaCup!!  Happy birthday to me!!

Francine

Campus Diva: How to Get Involved on Campus

campus-diva-header
iStock_72217607_XLARGE v2Back to school means classes, homework, sporting events, extra-curricular events, campus clubs and much more. But getting involved on campus may be difficult, especially if you’re new to the school! Don’t fret. The Diva Team has you covered with tips and tricks on how to get involved on campus.

Find what you’re passionate about

First things first, determine what you’re passionate about, or what sparks your interest. This could be something within your field of study or even a hobby that you’ve been pursuing. Once you’ve found an area of interest, finding an extracurricular activity will be much easier and more enjoyable.

Go to orientation week

Orientation week is a great way to discover the different activities that take place around campus. Whether it’s a sports team or a club, you’ll be able to receive information and find out what’s needed in order to join. Orientation week is also a great way to meet new people and make friends! Even for returning students, orientation weeks usually have a fair for all the campus clubs and organizations which can help you get to know what kinds of things you can get involved in!

Ask your student unioniStock_73382761_XXXLARGE v2

Your student union is there for you! Comprised of both current and past students, the student union hosts events, information nights, tours, and more. If you didn’t make it to orientation, you can always visit your student union office and ask for more information about on-campus opportunities.

Join intermural sport teams

Intermural sports are a great way to stay active, meet new people, and get involved! Visiting your athletic department or the athletic centre is the best way to find out what intermural teams are available. Intermural sports will allow for that work to play balance and give you a break from school work to have fun with friends.

Follow your school’s social media channels

Social media is a great way to find out information about school events. Follow channels such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. This is an easy way to find out more information about how to get involved and connect with other students.  Colleges tend to offer a wide variety of school events and there will probably be something that suits your interests!

iStock_86271001_XXXLARGE v2Network, Network, Network

… oh and network! Networking is very important if you want to get involved and meet new people. A good way to find out different networking events is through your schools’ social media accounts. Networking will not only help you get involved but it could also lead to other potential opportunities.

The Diva Team wants to know how you get involved on campus! Send us your tips and tricks to make the best of your new school year.
