If you’re using a reusable menstrual disc for the first time, you likely have some questions. How do I insert and remove it? Will it leak? Can I go to sleep with a menstrual disc in? How do I properly clean and store my reusable menstrual disc so that it lasts?

Purchasing a reusable menstrual disc is an eco-friendly alternative to tampons and pads that provides more comfort, affordability, and protection. It may take some figuring out, but we’re here to help!

Here are our tips for first-time users.

How To Use a Menstrual Disc for Beginners

Learning how to insert your menstrual disc takes 3 simple steps; pinching it together, gently sliding it in, and tucking it into place.

Always remember before using your menstrual cup or disc for the first time to sanitize it for 5-10 minutes in boiling water. Between uses, you can use a pH-balanced soap, like DivaWash

Here’s how to put in a menstrual disc in a bit more detail.

How To Insert a Menstrual Disc for Beginners

Fold it in half once to make one long narrow shape. Hold it lengthwise with the pull-tab facing away from the body. Sit on the toilet or prop your leg up on the bathtub. Separate your labia with one hand and with the other, guide the back rim of the disc up into the vagina.

Using your index finger, gently push the Diva Disc back towards your tailbone as far as it can comfortably go, then down and back. This placement will be slightly higher than a menstrual cup. To find the correct position, you will be pushing the disc through the vaginal canal, into the vaginal fornix and around the cervix. Then use your index finger again to tuck the front edge of the disc behind the pubic bone so that the rim can expand.

If you can’t feel it, it’s properly placed. If you can still feel it, make sure that it is tucked as high as possible behind the pubic bone. The menstrual disc sits around the cervix to collect menstrual flow.

Because it is shallower than a cup, it is a more comfortable option for people with lower cervix heights. If you have a high cervix, insertion might feel daunting, but getting acquainted with your unique anatomy is a normal part of the learning curve. The Diva Disc is designed to safely be worn for up to 12 hours. If you have a heavy flow, it may require emptying once or twice within that window.

How to Remove a Menstrual Disc for Beginners

Removing your menstrual disc can also be done in 3 simple steps; hooking onto the anti-slip pull-tab, gently sliding the disc out, and emptying it.

The Diva Disc comes with an anti-slip pull-tab for quick and stress-free removal. The unique oval-shape prevents rotation during wear, keeping the anti-slip pull-tab in place for an easy removal process.

Start by taking a few deep breaths and relaxing your pelvic muscles to bring your cervix closer to the vaginal opening. Hook your finger onto the pull-tab to untuck the disc from the pubic bone. Gently slide the disc out, keeping it horizontal to avoid spills. Empty the contents into the toilet. Cleanse and re-insert.

How the Diva Disc Prevents Leaking

If you have ever wondered, “why does my menstrual disc leak?” or felt stressed out at the mention of “auto dumping”, know that we’ve got you covered! The Diva Disc is designed with a patent pending Leakproof Shield™ to prevent mid-wear leaks and messy removal.

The Leakproof Shield™ partially covers the sloped catch basin. Menstrual blood collects in the basin and is shielded from spilling out. The oval-shape of the disc prevents rotation and when paired with the anti-slip pull tab, means removal is more straightforward and mess-free. No struggling to find the tab or worrying about flow spilling as you slide the disc out.

Can I Sleep with the Diva Disc in?

The Diva Disc is safe and comfortable to wear while sleeping. It is safe for up to 12 hours of continuous protection and once inserted, provides barely-there comfort so you can sleep peacefully through the night.

How Do I Clean & Store the Diva Disc?

Before using, it’s recommended that you set a timer and sanitize the disc in boiling water for 5-10 minutes.

Tip: Place the disc inside a metal whisk before in the boiling water! This will prevent melting if your water boils down.

In between uses, cleanse your disc with a mild, unscented, oil-free, and pH-balanced cleanser like DivaWash. DivaWash was specially formulated to protect your vagina’s natural pH, as well as the disc’s integrity.
